"Free Your Inner Musician"
This workshop is open to all, from those new to the flute to the seasoned performer. Helen believes that putting "play" into your playing keeps ruts and plateaus at bay. This fast paced, fun romp of a workshop frees one's inner musician with laughter and levity through Helen's flute games, exercises, and group play that participants can continue on their own at home. There is a time for buckling down in learning, but as the famous saying goes, and she misquotes: "All work and no play makes for a dull play.” Helen's philosophy is that keeping one's mind open, and exploring everything with childlike wonder, are the keys to maintaining a lifelong passion for learning and living.

Get ready for a flute workout! Participants will embark on a fun and interactive workshop experience that is focused on enhancing their flute-playing abilities. We will focus on the intricacies of technique and breath control, empowering participants to craft their own unique musical experience on the Native American Style Flute. Through a combination of technical instruction, creative exploration, and mindfulness practices, we will focus on refining our skills to allow us to have more confidence in our flute playing and cultivate a deeper connection with our flutes. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced player, this workshop offers a valuable opportunity for self expression and growth and a whole lot of flute playing in the world of flute playing.
Note: For those who would like to participate in the interactive portion of the workshop, please bring your G Minor flutes.
Inspired by John Coltrane, Eric Harland, and a lifetime of casually turning language into rhythm, this workshop by Dan LaPorta explores the powerful connection between language and rhythm, and how to leverage this connection to elevate your music and your musical mind. Together we will delve into this technique, learn how to connect this way of thinking to our hands and an instrument, and how its practice can elevate your performance, rescue you from feeling stuck with overused patterns and phrases, help you improvise or perform with more intension, and add elements of purpose to your music, in your living room, in nature, or on stage. Open a whole new world of musical potential for any level from beginner to professional performer.
“Cover the Holes and Breathe”
This workshop is for those of you taking your first steps on your flute journey. Helen feels it is an honor to take those steps with you and believes the flute is an instrument anyone can play! She will start you on your way with confidence, passion, and a good dose of humor. Join her in a safe, warm, and comfortable environment for learning and letting your fear of squeaking and squawking go. As she states in her video on the subject: “The only people who do not squeak are people who do not flute!”

Join us for a discussion and an interactive experience of Sound as Medicine. My particular focus will be the drum, although the principles of sound healing that will be shared apply to any instrument, including our original instrument, our voice. The drumming can be as simple as the heartbeat, which was the first rhythm we ever heard. Other sacred rhythms will be shared, and drums will be available for your use. We will discuss and experience:
· Intention is powerful
· Sound, plus intention equals healing
· Sound, plus intention, plus visualization equals manifestation
· Sound, plus intention, plus movement creates a deep connection with self, our greatest healer
· Sound is a way to connect with whatever your concept of Source is
· Sound can be a prayer (my word not necessarily yours)
The entire experience of intentional drumming is of course healing. The drum rhythms are ancient, mostly slow, meditative, and deeply transformative. They feel, of course, quite shamanic because we connect with the energies of the earth...the animals...the elements...the trees...the stones...the heart of the Earth Mother. The space in the center of a lovingly created sound cannot help but heal and expand our hearts and our consciousness. Join us in our sacred sound circle! No experience is needed.

We purchase our first Native Style flute and start experiencing some of the magic that surrounds this incredible instrument. Before long, we are navigating the instrument with confidence, melodies and songs begin revealing themselves, and we soon discover that playing our flutes in front of an audience touches both the player and the listener in very special ways. The natural progression is the desire to play, perform, and share your melodies and songs with audiences as often as you can.

The modern flute that we all know and love is a fairly new creation. In this workshop, we will explore the origins of wind instruments in North America, starting with primitive bone instruments and the rim-blown flutes of Ancestral Puebloan cultures. Then, using replicas of several historical instruments as well as old flutes by well-known Native makers and some more recent flutes, we'll take a look at how the Native American Flute has evolved over the last 200 years to become the instrument we play today.

In this single 2-hour class the students will go from little or no prior experience in playing metal handpans to being able to play with hands and/or mallets on the two most prevalent types of handpan, the standard convex turtle-shaped pan and metal tongue drums. Basic skills taught will include body position, proper hand & mallet striking techniques, handpan terminology, and playing basic rhythms. NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. This workshop focuses primarily on achieving good tones & basic rhythms. There will be an overview of the various types of handpans available in the global market. There will be several handpans from a few manufacturers provided by the instructor for students to take turns playing. Students are encouraged to bring any metal handpans or tank drums they own. You do not need a drum to attend the workshop.

History
In 2012, 4 people met and became friends in folk guitar class at Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). In 2013, our guitar instructor asked a few of us to play at a service at her church. Wanting to help, we agreed to do it. Then the church asked for the name of our band. Up until that point, we hadn’t played together before, or called ourselves a band. In a mad scramble to give them a name before their program went to print, we thought that this name seemed appropriate since we had learned to play our guitars later in life at Lifelong Learning. Ever after, we have used It’s Never Too Late as our band name. We play an eclectic mix of Americana songs from folk, pop and roots music. We play for fun, and we play for joy.
Members
Kathy Owen - Native American Flute, guitar, percussion, vocals
Glenn Rill - Guitar, vocals
Lynda Hastings - Guitar, vocals
Bill Stanley - Guitar, percussion, vocals

Brad Young from 4 Wind Flutes has been making flutes since the mid 90s. His quest for knowledge about flutes has been never ending. He looked for many of the most respected flute makers early on to absorb all the knowledge they were willing to share. He has made many different styles and tunings of the flute that have been played and sent all over the world. From double walking stick flutes to triple drone and alternate tunings his focus is on producing quality flutes one at a time. You can see some of the flutes he has made over the years from his website.
The Native American Style Flute is a very special and unique instrument. Jim fell in love with the sound long before he knew what he was hearing. Once he made the connection between the sound and the instrument, there was no turning back. The journey had begun. Jim made his first flute in April of 2006 and has been handcrafting and refining them ever since.

My Sacred Medicine Wheel Drums, Rattles, Medicine Bags, Smudge Fans and Feathers and custom blended smudge herbs are made in an ancient way using various forms of shamanic techniques which create an innate bond between the materials being used and the creation. In this way each tool is infused with the essence of the life of all the elements of its creation and the animals and plants are honored. The lacing pattern for the eight pointed star on the drum was given to me by Spirit in a vision.
It is my honor to work with and create from the skins of these incredible beings. Know that an animal never dies to make a drum. I can promise that a Horse has had a natural death. The other beings were likely taken for food. The skin is then honored with continued life through the voice of our drums and rattles. Every aspect of the creation of these drums and rattles is done with reverence, honor and acknowledgment of the privilege of carrying this medicine in our hands.
May each of my Sacred Medicine Tools find the keeper who will honor its essence and may each tool honor its new keeper with all the medicine of its heart.
Additionally, I teach shamanism and sound healing nationally and offer private healing sessions locally.

Suzanne Morgan, owner of Native Spirit by Suzanne was established in 1995. Creating handcrafted items like antelope medicine pouches to beaded jewelry. As her business grew her inventory did too. She started supporting Native American artists from the southwest and incorporated handcrafted sterling silver jewelry into her product line.
A maker of Native American and Southwestern rim-blown style flutes. Making and playing flutes since 2006, I have helped numerous people take their first steps into the world of Native American Style flutes.
I became acquainted with Native American flute music when my wife and I visited New Mexico for continuing education classes over the years. We bought a few CD’s and enjoyed the relaxing and soothing voice of the flute.Having been a hobby chip carver and wood worker most of my adult life, I decided to make a flute myself. After making a lot of expensive kindling I was able to produce a flute that was in tune and I was hooked on turning a piece of wood into a quality musical instrument.
I was very fortunate to have retired to North Carolina where I met a local flute maker who became my mentor and helped me along the way to improve the quality of my flutes. At various festivals other flute makers and performers have been generous in sharing information to help me improve my flute making and playing skills.
My objective is to make a well tuned, high quality, and reasonably priced flute for you, my customer. I will never sell a flute that does not meet my high standards and that I would not want to own myself. Flute making is a constantly improving process and I will continue to strive to make the highest quality flute that I possibly can.
